When you visit Omaha Beach, it's hard not to feel the weight of history. Every grain of sand seems charged with memory. And while strolls along the beach are sometimes enough to stir the emotions, a number of fascinating museums shed light on this crucial page of our past. Here is our selection of the must-see museums around Omaha, to be visited between two sunsets over the sea.
πͺ The Omaha Beach Memorial Museum - Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer
A stone's throw from the sand, a direct immersion in 6 June 1944
Located just 200 metres from the beach, this family-run museum is often the first stop for the curious. And with good reason: its human-scale atmosphere and beautiful scenography make it an excellent introduction to the history of the D-Day landings. You'll find authentic objects, reconstructed scenes (with mannequins, vehicles and equipment), and a documentary film that gives an emotional account of the D-Day. It's clear, lively and accessible even to the youngest visitors.

π§ D-Day Omaha Museum - Vierville-sur-Mer
A private and authentic collection, a stone's throw from the beach
This discreet but fascinating museum was founded by a passionate collector. There are no special effects here: it's the objects themselves that tell the story. There are over 3,000 mΒ² of exhibits, including weapons, uniforms, original vehicles and even parts of landing barges. One of the main attractions? Its immediate proximity to the battlefields it evokes. Step outside and you're just a few minutes from the sands of Omaha.

ποΈ Battle of Normandy Memorial Museum - Bayeux
A little further on, but a broader look at the whole Battle of Normandy
If you want to broaden your perspective beyond 6 June, head for Bayeux (about a 30-minute drive away). This museum retraces the entire Normandy campaign, from June to August 1944. The exhibition combines uniforms, archive documents, tactical maps and poignant eyewitness accounts. It provides a better understanding of Allied strategy, the logistical challenges and the fighting in the rear. It's a great complement to the visit to the beaches.

And after the visit?
At Omaha Home, we like to think that memory can also be cultivated in serenity. After these emotionally-charged visits, why not return to your holiday cocoon, prepare yourself a good local meal and enjoy the peace and quiet of the garden or terrace? These museums remind us of the meaning of freedom... and it's up to us to make the most of it, with family or friends.
π« Tip: Remember to check museum opening times, especially out of season. Some also offer audio guides or booklets for children!
